The Department of Contemporary Culture – Deputy Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with Dance House Lefkosia, announce an Open Call for participation in a Residency Programme at the State Gallery of Contemporary Art - Majestic, during the periods May - June 2024 and September - October 2024, concerning professional dance and performance artists.
The Programme aims to promote synergies between the arts as an integral part of the State Gallery programme, the promotion of the multimodality of the artworks in the permanent exhibition and their alternative interpretations, the engagement of different audiences and the promotion of the work of contemporary Cypriot artists. Proposals should be in relation to and in communication with the permanent exhibition of the State Gallery (artworks and artists) and/or the site (architecture, history and function). The selected artists will have the opportunity to visit regularly, interact with and spend time in the State Gallery space, developing their research and practice in dialogue with the permanent exhibition.
Applications can be submitted by Cypriot or Cyprus-based professional dancers/performers. The application can be for Solo, Duet, or Group work.
The selected artists should be able to visit the State Gallery - Majestic for their research for at
least 15 hours per week and to carry out three public activities during their residency: a seminar/collaborative workshop, a discussion/lecture and a performance (in progress) at the end of the Residency Programme.
Interested artists are encouraged to attend one of the sessions to be held at the State Gallery - Majestic on Saturday, 9 March 2024 (13:00-15:00) and Tuesday, 19 March 2024 (14:00-16:00). During the meetings there will be an opportunity to become acquainted with the Gallery and the permanent exhibition.
RESIDENCY PERIOD:
Each residency will have a duration of two months.
1st period: May - June 2024
2nd period: September - October 2024
SELECTED PROPOSALS:
The program will provide photographic documentation of all public events, technical support (if necessary) and meetings with a mentor/dramaturg, to support and help develop the artists' practice, whose appointment will be made by the selection committee according to the proposal’s needs. In addition, each selected proposal will receive:
For a solo participation:
Total Artist's Fee: 2000 euros
Material costs: up to 100 euros*
For duet/group participation:
Total Artists' Fee: 4000 euros
Material costs: up to 100 euros*
*upon communication with the team of State Gallery
Notes:
1. Regarding technical support, potential technical needs must be stated at the time of application and be in compliance with the terms of operation and safety of the State Gallery premises. The applicants are responsible for the use and proper functioning of the technical equipment.
2. The video recording of the activities is at the expense and responsibility of the applicants and subject to the consent of the Department of Contemporary Culture.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
• Quality and clarity of the proposal (30%)
• Connection of the proposal with the permanent collection of the State Gallery - Majestic (artworks and artists), the space and the architecture of the building (30%)
• The interdisciplinary nature of the proposal (20%)
• Audience engagement plan (20%)

The selection will be made by a three-member committee composed by: Elena Panagiotou (State Gallery programme and events coordinator, museum educator), Elena Antoniou (dance and performance artist) and Maria Kamberis (choreographer, researcher). The results will be announced by mid - April 2024.
