Living Museums: Collaborative Creation, Performance & Education Based on Museum Artefacts

Cyprus Museum , Nicosia
Friday, July 11, 2014 | 8.00 pm

The Department of Arts of the European University Cyprus (EUC), in collaboration with the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, the University of Hull and the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus organizes a unique music and art event in the premises of the Cyprus Museum that will take place on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 8pm.

Faculty and students of the above mentioned schools will create a series of innovative sound and visual interventions in the unique space of the Cyprus Museum, aiming to provide an alternative museum experience. Ancient statues and museum inscriptions will become protagonists and sites of reference for these new inventive artistic pursuits.

The various newly produced art projects will highlight both contemporary and classical approaches and incorporate various mixed media techniques, new technologies, sound and video. Percussion instruments made from everyday objects, tubes and electronic sounds will unite with the sounds of the human voice and conventional musical instruments such as piano, guitar and flute. These original sound compositions will give another dimension, color and substance to the architecture, space and objects of the museum.

This event is the outcome of the European Erasmus Intensive Program, which is funded by the Foundation for Management Programs and Lifelong Learning (IDEP). In this intensive two-week program, 12 students and 4 teachers from Holland and the UK, work collaboratively with students, teachers and artists from the European University Cyprus. Dr Evis Sammoutis, Assistant Professor of Music at EUC, is the project’s initiator and coordinator.

Finally, all the project’s promotional material – logo, website (www.livingmuseums.com), visual diary in the form of a documentary – is designed and produced by the students of the Graphic Design program at EUC under the guidance of EUC faculty Dr Elena Stylianou and Demetra Englezou.
